HSA/FSA is coming to Shop Pay
Shopify partnered with Truemed so shoppers can now pay with HSA/FSA funds right inside Shop Pay. Early access is open: join the waitlist to offer it in your store. Truemed is the only HSA/FSA payment option available in Shop Pay.
Today, a shopper who wants to use HSA/FSA funds on Shopify has to check out as a guest, forcing shoppers to take extra steps at checkout if they are already signed in. After Shop Pay’s partnership with Truemed, HSA/FSA becomes a new payment option in a familiar, native checkout experience. Shop Pay also saves the shopper’s HSA/FSA card for their next order, and if a shopper saved an HSA/FSA card in Shop Pay at another store, they can use it at yours too.
Multi-capture for Shopify
If you ship one Shopify order in several parts, you can now capture the Truemed payment in parts, one capture for each shipment. You get paid for each shipment when you ship it. Multi-capture works on stores that capture payments manually, and it covers orders from the day we turn it on for your store. Also new for every Shopify store: when Truemed declines a capture, Shopify admin now shows the reason, such as an expired authorization. We are turning on multi-capture for a first group of merchants now, so email merchants@truemed.com to join. Capturing payments guide.
New on Truemed: Nutrafol, Naturepedic, CookUnity, and STAND+
Hundreds of new brands launched HSA/FSA payments with Truemed in October using one of our many supported integration types.
STAND+ was one of the first brands to turn on our new HSA/FSA payments in Shop Pay integration, so its shoppers can pay with HSA/FSA funds without leaving a logged-in Shop Pay checkout. STAND+ also kept Truemed’s guest checkout on, so shoppers who check out without Shop Pay can still use their HSA/FSA funds. To offer HSA/FSA in Shop Pay, join the waitlist.
Faster eligibility reviews for new products
New products in your catalog now get their HSA/FSA eligibility status sooner, so approved products can show HSA/FSA messaging closer to launch day. We expanded our product categorization team and built new tools for reviewing items, helping to 5x our categorization speeds. You do not need to change anything—this is automatically enabled for all of our merchants. Products & SKUs guide.
Revamped PDP modal for API merchants
The revamped product detail page (PDP) modal is now live for API merchants on the standard Truemed modal. Shoppers see a shorter, cleaner modal with three numbered steps, from selecting Truemed at checkout to getting a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN), so they know how HSA/FSA payment works before they reach checkout. The modal fits its content on desktop and opens as a half-sheet on mobile, so shoppers can read it without scrolling. Truemed hosts the widget script, so you do not need to change anything. PDP widget guide.
Simpler onboarding for API merchants
New API merchants now set up Truemed step by step in the Truemed dashboard, so every setup task is available in one place. The dashboard lists each step, such as connecting your Stripe account for payouts, creating API keys, setting up webhooks, and testing payments and refunds. Truemed also validates your installation during onboarding and checks off many steps on its own, such as the webhooks step after your server accepts its first webhook. When you finish the steps, you can request production access from the dashboard, and your Solutions Engineer will review your integration before you go live. API setup guide.
Improvements to our health survey
We tested several changes to the Truemed health survey to help more qualified shoppers finish checkout. When a cart holds fitness footwear, such as training shoes, the survey now asks clearer follow-up questions. The last button in the survey also has a shorter label, Confirm and Continue, to increase clarity and confidence for shoppers. Both changes are live with nothing for you to set up, and the footwear change affects only stores that sell fitness footwear. Checkout experience guide.
New categories and subcategories on Truemed.com
Shoppers on Truemed.com can now filter down to the exact type of product they want. When shoppers click through to your store, more of them arrive ready to buy. Every product now belongs to one of 11 categories, with new pages for Dental, Ergonomics & Support, Home & Personal Care, and Therapy & Coaching. Each category has subcategories, such as Exercise Bikes, Mattresses, and Red Light Therapy. Shoppers see these subcategories in the top navigation menus, in the shop page filters, and in the breadcrumbs on each product page.
Backup cards for HSA/FSA subscriptions
If you sell subscriptions through the Truemed API, you can now require a backup credit or debit card when a shopper pays with HSA/FSA. Fewer renewals fail when a shopper’s HSA/FSA account runs low, so more subscribers stay with you. At checkout, the shopper pays for the first order with the HSA/FSA card, and Truemed saves the backup card without charging it. On a later renewal, if the HSA/FSA account does not have enough funds, Truemed charges the rest to the backup card. Shoppers see how Truemed uses the backup card before they subscribe. To turn on backup cards, email merchants@truemed.com.
Saved cards at checkout
Returning shoppers can now pay with a card saved to their Truemed account, on both Shopify and API checkouts. After a shopper signs in with an emailed code or with Google, their saved cards appear on the payment page, already selected. With no card number or security code to retype, shoppers get through checkout faster. In testing, shoppers with a saved card finished checkout more often, so we rolled this feature out for every merchant automatically.
Expandable Savings checkout widget
Expandable Savings is a new Shopify checkout widget that shows the shopper’s estimated HSA/FSA savings in dollars on one line. Shoppers see their savings at a glance, and they can tap the widget to read three short steps and the savings disclaimer without leaving checkout. By default, it sits at the top of checkout above the express checkout buttons, so mobile shoppers see it without opening the order summary. Like the other checkout widgets, it needs Shopify Plus. Checkout widgets guide.
New navigation on Truemed.com
We rebuilt the top navigation on Truemed.com so that shopping comes first on every page, on desktop and mobile. Before, Shop sat next to Blog and About, and search was a small icon. Now the header has a wide search bar, and new Categories and Brands menus replace the Shop, Resources, and Help Center links. Shoppers get a clearer view of what Truemed.com offers, because the Categories menu shows its categories at a glance. From the Brands menu, shoppers can go straight to a brand’s page, so they spend less time looking for what they want.
Improved marketplace search
Shoppers on Truemed.com can now find your products faster. They see suggestions for search terms, categories, products, and brands as soon as they type one letter. Each product suggestion shows its brand name, and if nothing matches, shoppers see featured products instead. On the shop page, results update as shoppers type, and shoppers can filter results by brand and sort them. Shoppers also see their recent searches, and on mobile, search opens full screen. With better search, Truemed sends your site more shoppers who already know what they want, so more of them buy.
More shoppers finish checkout
This quarter, we tested changes to the Truemed health survey and payment page and kept the ones that helped more shoppers finish checkout. With those changes, checkout conversion rose by more than 5%, so you get more orders from the same number of shoppers. The changes are live for every merchant, with nothing for you to set up. Checkout experience guide.
Cart Drawer widget for Shopify
The new Cart Drawer widget adds an HSA/FSA banner to your theme’s slide-out cart when the cart holds items that may qualify. Shoppers see it right before checkout, when they are most ready to buy. They can tap the banner to learn how to use their HSA/FSA funds on the order. Unlike the checkout widgets, which need Shopify Plus, it works on every Shopify plan. The widget is in beta for the Dawn and Horizon themes, and you add it from the Truemed Extensions App home page. Truemed Extensions App guide.
Speed improvements across all of Truemed
Shoppers give up on slow pages, so we made Truemed faster. In late August, we made it four times as fast to save a health survey answer or move to the next page. We also cut the average server response time across Truemed in half. In September, we made the slowest 5% of product catalog loads on Truemed.com twice as fast. These changes are already live for every shopper, with nothing for you to set up.
Revamped Truemed Extensions App
The Truemed Extensions App is now easier to set up and use, with a new home page in your Shopify admin that shows your synced product count, the widgets you have placed, and what is left to set up. It keeps your catalog and its eligibility in sync with Truemed automatically, then uses that eligibility to power checkout widgets, self-updating collections, storefront badges, and post-purchase reimbursement links. Every widget is a drag-and-drop block in Shopify’s own editor, so there is no code to write, and built-in analytics and A/B testing show which HSA/FSA messages get more shoppers to buy. The app is available to all Shopify plans and most merchants are set up in under 10 minutes. Visit the Truemed Extensions App install guide to get started today.
Sizes, colors, and variants on Truemed marketplace
Product detail pages on Truemed.com just got richer, now showing your full range of product variants: sizes, colors, and more. The PDPs also now carry more images, prices, and improved descriptions. Clicking the Shop now button sends the customer straight to the exact variant they picked, cutting the number of clicks between browsing our marketplace and checking out on your store.
Extended auths and multi-capture (90-day)
For merchants who handle pre-orders, backorders, or extended and partial fulfillment, Truemed now supports extended auth windows. This practice exists for many e-commerce merchants already, and the Truemed payment method now gives merchants up to 90 days for pre-orders and backorders. If you’d like to enable extended auths on your account, reach out to merchants@truemed.com. Manual delayed capture guide.
Shopify Collections
Shopify merchants can now create HSA/FSA-eligible product collections automatically, making it easy to power dedicated HSA/FSA landing pages and storefront sections in minutes. Merchants can generate collections from Truemed eligibility without manually tagging each SKU. For all merchants using the Truemed Extensions App (and anyone who installs it going forward), generate collections from Truemed eligibility metafields automatically synced into Shopify to create an always-up-to-date collection with ease. Whether creating an HSA/FSA campaign for end-of-year promotion, or a permanent landing page for traffic from Truemed’s marketplace, dynamic HSA/FSA collections just became easy with Truemed.
